Sneez Health

A Real-time illness tracking web-based application

Summary

Sneez L.L.C. is a company that is focused on improving the health of communities. The Sneez web application provides users with real-time illness data in the form of an interactive map, symptom reporting and tracking, current news and trends, participation in research studies, and the ability to quickly view services provided by partnered health care systems. During our initial engagement, we quickly discovered that Sneez was facing challenges around user onboarding as well as user attrition.

Challenge

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Google Play and the Apple app store began removing applications that could not meet its stringent health data policies and guidelines when utilizing 3rd party health care data, as was the case with Sneez. The Sneez application was subsequently removed from these platforms, leaving them without a way to connect with users and drive revenue. We were hired to reimagine the Sneez app in a web environment so that they could bypass downloading the app from 3rd party platforms like Google Play.

Discovery

We started the project with a 4-week discovery period to identify, prioritize, and design a minimum feature set that could be built by the beginning of flu season, typically around mid-October. The following discovery and RICE prioritization (Reach, Impact, Confidence. Effort) workshops led to a defined roadmap that we could begin working on.

UX Design

During the 4-week discovery period, I had the opportunity to interview key stakeholders including founders, board members, the CEO, as well as the former head of product & research. While all of them spoke about the challenges that Covid-19 posed on the business as well as the application's progress, each painted a slightly different version of Sneez and its narrative arc over the course of its existence. These discrepancies provided helpful clues into what challenges were not being addressed. After speaking with end-users, physicians, and health care partners, I began creating workflows and wireframes that addressed the challenges faced in the users' experience.

Visual Design

The final high fidelity designs displayed a geolocation map showing illness cases in supported areas with a filter by illness feature, easy to access health care partner services, account creation workflows, notification onboarding, and account management settings for account holders. All designs were created in Figma.

First Alerts

A major factor in reducing user attrition was the development and design of a illness alert notification system. The system tracked outbreaks of reported cases from partnering health care companies and triggered alerts based on each illness's severity risk, transmissibility, and rate of change. Once established thresholds were triggered, illness alerts were sent to users who were in trending illness locations. Helpful links brought users to the Sneez application were they can see trending cases in their area on an interactive map. Additionally, user can locate and connect with a local health care provider services with the click of a button.

"Zac has a better understanding in 6 weeks of working on this product than I feel like the entire previous development agency has ever had."
